What is 'virtual' reality?

Television, movies, video games, SNS-we have so many opportunities to experience reality 'virtually'. Especially in the year 2020, with the global pandemic, we have moved many experiences 'online'.

When we say 'virtual' reality, what do we mean? Is this a different kind of reality? Is it just a different way to access reality? Or is it totally different from, and maybe opposed to, reality?
